SOA Software’s Service Manager™ integrates with Oracle’s BPEL Business Process Manager and related products.  With Oracle exposing and consuming Web services as part of their next-generation of eBusiness Suite, version 11.5.10, the Service Manager provides Oracle customers with the ability to implement Web services with end-to-end security, location transparency, SLAs, and quality of service. With the Service Manager, Oracle’s process tools can now enable the benefits of an SOA by abstracting all the complexity of consuming Web services away from the process tools, bringing true agility for the first time to a loosely coupled heterogeneous environment.

Integration with Oracle eBusiness Suite 11.5.10
As a comprehensive platform for XML and Web services security and management, the Service Manager can be used to extend the functionality of the Oracle eBusiness Suite 11.5.10 Process Manager and enable a secure, manageable Service-Oriented Architecture that leverages Oracle technology.  The Service Manager provides the following security and management functionality for Web services exposed in your enterprise through Oracle 11.5.10:

  • Centralized Policy Management
  • Performance Monitoring and Reporting
  • Security Enablement, Enforcement and Auditing
  • Provisioning, Contracts and SLA management
  • Web Services Publishing, Search and Discovery via UDDI
  • Multi-protocol message transport for quality-of-service

Integration with Oracle BPEL Process Manager
SOA Software’s Service Manager can be used to extend the functionality of the Oracle BPEL Process Manager and enable a complete Business Process Management solution based on Web services.

  • Securing and Managing the BPEL workflow - SOA Software’s Management Point™ can be used to secure and manage the BPEL workflow because the BPEL workflow is a Web service defined using a WSDL.  As a result, the communication/invocation from a client application that uses SOA Software’s Gateway™ can be secured and monitored.
  • Securing and Managing Web Services that are part of the BPEL workflow - In this scenario, the Management Point is used to secure and manage the underlying Web services that are part of the BPEL workflow.  The BPEL workflow may have several Web services with various security and monitoring requirements which can all be managed using the Management Point.
  • Monitoring the BPEL workflow with SLAs - The Service Manager has the ability to monitor Web service performance and enforce SLAs that are associated with the BPEL workflow.  The DESM can generate alerts in case of SLA violations.

SOA Software Acquires LogicLibrary

Click here to view a print-ready version of this page

Los Angeles, Calif., May 12th, 2008SOA Software, a leading Integrated SOA Governance Automation vendor, today announced that it has acquired LogicLibrary, a leading SOA Repository and Governance vendor.  This acquisition combines two recognized leaders, creating a dominant SOA Governance company with an impressive customer base.

SOA Software is positioned by Gartner, Inc. in the leader’s quadrant of the “Magic Quadrant for Integrated SOA Governance Technology Sets, 2007” [1] report. The Magic Quadrant for Integrated SOA Governance Technology Sets evaluated 18 vendors and summarizes the state of the market for SOA Governance.  The company focuses on SOA Policy Governance and SOA Operational Governance with strong registry, policy management, and service management capabilities.

Forrester Research ranks LogicLibrary as a leader in The Forrester Wave: SOA Service Life-Cycle Management Q1 2008 [2].  Forrester states that LogicLibrary provides a broad and comprehensive set of features with the strongest reporting and analytics capability.  LogicLibrary focuses on SOA Development Governance with a best-of-breed enterprise repository providing broad support and governance for development assets /services and deep integration and federation with IDEs and application development point solutions.

The combination of the two companies creates the most comprehensive Integrated SOA Governance Automation solution that spans all lifecycle stages and governance types from Planning to Development, Policy, and through Operational Governance.  This allows enterprises to accelerate their full adoption of SOA with the rapid delivery of relevant consumable services for distributed and mainframe environments. The discipline of SOA can deliver great cost, agility, and risk management benefits, but with these benefits come a set of challenges imploring the enterprise to make the “right” SOA architecture and governance decisions. This coupled with the rapid maturing of the enterprise SOA environment has driven companies to demand a comprehensive solution for all of their SOA Governance needs.

“We are able to strengthen our company with the addition of LogicLibrary’s complementary technology, team and customers,” said Paul Gigg, president and chief executive officer of SOA Software.  “This acquisition combined with our ability to continue to drive product innovation extends our leadership in the Integrated SOA Governance Automation market and makes SOA Software the strongest candidate to succeed as the platform-independent leader in this fast growing market. Now customers have a clear choice for governance across all assets, lifecycle stages, and constituencies that span distributed and mainframe environments”

With enterprise applications and service platforms from companies like IBM, Microsoft and SAP offering built-in platform-optimized governance capabilities it is essential that companies have an enterprise wide SOA Governance solution so that they can be confident that their platforms won’t compromise the fidelity of the governance systems and structures defined in an enterprise SOA program.  The addition of LogicLibrary’s technology extends SOA Software’s integration capabilities across Governed Development Platforms (such as IBM, Microsoft and Open Source) as well as Governed Service Platforms (such as IBM, JBoss, Microsoft, and SAP).  SOA Software’s platform-independent Integrated SOA Governance Automation solution and Governed Service Platform certification processes ensure that Governed Service Platforms can implement and enforce governance policies proving reporting data to enable a closed-loop audit process.

“The combination of SOA Software’s governance products, with LogicLibrary’s strategy to provide federation with other leading repositories, creates a single solution that provides unparalleled lifecycle and policy governance across all major platforms,” said Alan Himler, chief executive officer and chairman of LogicLibrary.  “We are excited to join forces and capitalize on our complementary capabilities by creating the most comprehensive, closed-loop Integrated SOA Governance Automation solution.”

What is Logidex?

LogicLibrary Logidex is a “best of breed” service development-lifecycle governance platform that enables customers to integrate SDA processes within the SOA service lifecycle in conjunction with related SOA governance product categories. Logidex is a software development asset (SDA) mapping and discovery engine that manages and represents inherently complex, enterprise application environments in a graphical, intuitive way. Software development assets can include: executables (e.g., components, services, frameworks) and their associated software development lifecycle artifacts (e.g., requirements documentation, UML models, test plans), as well as knowledge assets, such as best practices and design patterns. The Logidex SDA Library is an inventory of a company’s SDAs and their relationships to each other, business processes and the technical infrastructure. A consumable library of SDAs, coupled with strong process control, is the basis for enabling and managing enterprise SOA initiatives.

Logidex Capabilities

Your SDA Library

  • Asset types can include components (.NET, J2EE), legacy systems, Web services and/or knowledge assets, such as patterns and best practices, used by development teams.
  • Using patented processes, SDAs are mapped to imported business and technical architectures.
  • Preloaded library content includes Sun’s Core J2EE Patterns, the Federal Enterprise Architecture (FEA) and – direct from Microsoft’s patterns & practices Group –Enterprise Solution Patterns and reference applications and architectures.

Discover SDAs Collaboratively

  • The Logidex discovery engine offers capabilities ranging from simple keyword searches to sophisticated, model-based searches.
  • Active Design™ allows business analysts to create a persistent search specification from a business process model. Developers can then add technical criteria to this specification. This ability to easily define joint requirements also ensures that created applications meet the business’ needs.
  • When a search is run, if an SDA doesn’t exist that meets the search criteria an Asset Discovery Alert can be set that notifies the user via e-mail when a new or modified SDA meeting the search criteria becomes available.
  • Collaboration tools include discussion threads, project work areas and persistent queries that can be accessed by any member of the project team.

Employ and Govern SDAs Effectively

  • With SmartControls™ organizations can easily control the SDA production process from requirements to design and, finally, deployment. Companies can use LogicLibrary’s “out-of-the-box” process or customize it to fit their enterprise’s requirements.
  • Support for federated repositories allows organizations to share assets around the world, while tightly controlling how SDAs are created, viewed and consumed. With distributed development, off-shoring and outsourcing, these capabilities are a requirement for most enterprises.
  • From Logidex, users can launch SDA artifacts, such as source code, models and documentation, into the appropriate development tool.
  • Asset relationship information is also available, making it easier to understand how assets can be used effectively together.
  • Integration with leading modeling tools and integrated development environments (IDEs) facilitates easy access to SDAs stored in Logidex and ensures that use of an SDA library fits seamlessly into the application development process.

Why Logidex?

Modernize Your Existing Applications

Logidex is the only solution that enables enterprises to understand what assets exist, where they’re located and how each fits into a company’s business and technical landscape. By providing a context for understanding and assessing existing SDAs, Logidex acts as the first step for SOAs and other initiatives focused on modernizing existing applications.

Service Lifecycle Governance Starting at SOA Development

Logidex’s core SDA governance and management capabilities ensure that service provider development and architecture teams produce services in accordance with the organization’s business and technical architectures, best practices and SOA policies. These capabilities are extended across the service lifecycle by integrations with key partners that allow organizations to manage their services and assets from a single hub ranging from development-time through deployment.

SOLA - Mainframe SOA - Features and Benefits

Click here to view a print-ready version of this page

SOLA has several significant advantages over competitive products. Taken together these features provide lower cost and greater productivity.

    • Leverage Human Assets

All competitive products create services from existing mainframe programs, but only SOLA leverages human assets. With SOLA the mainframe programmer – the person who knows the program the best – creates the services. Competitive approaches expect the distributed programmer – the person who knows the program the least (if at all) to create services.

    • Global Dictionary

One of SOLA’s many features is an integrated global dictionary that allows for the automatic translation of COBOL field names without affecting the source program.  The SOLA dictionary centralizes translation services, therefore minimizing duplication of effort for developers.

    • Security based on WS-Security and WS-Policy

SOLA security is based on WS-Security and WS-Policy standards and implemented on the mainframe.  By implementing WS standards on the mainframe, SOLA provides efficient and flexible security, obviating the need for a middle tier security agent.

    • Batch Capability

SOLA provides a number of significant features that are available to the z/OS batch programmer.  Firstly, the SOLA DOM parser and API provide the batch programmer with methods to easily and inexpensively consume and create XML documents.  Secondly, the SOLA outbound support is also available to the batch programmer, making it simple for a batch program to consume an outbound web service.

    • Brower based Web 2.0 development environment

With SOLA there’s no workstation software to install – the entire SOLA development toolset runs in a browser. This is a huge advantage – in our experience the majority of developers don’t have workstations that are powerful enough to run the “previous generation” development toolsets provided by competitors.

    SOLA screen 2

    • Support for Architectural Standards

Using the combination of the SOLA dictionary, WSDL-first development and powerful WSDL customization features, SOLA can publish web services that comply with any and all possible architectural standards.

    • WSDL-First Development

A lot of mainframe shops that are adopting SOA develop WSDL that complies with their architecture standards before creating web services. SOLA allows developers to create services that comply with an existing WSDL as well as create services from scratch that generate their own definitions.  The SOLA dictionary can be leveraged to make this process faster and easier.

    • UDDI Directory

All services created by SOLA are automatically published to an external UDDI 3.0 registry, which ensures that services exposed by SOLA are visible and useable within the enterprise.

    • Standards Based

SOLA is a standards based solution, allowing interoperability across platforms, operating systems and programming languages.  Being standards based also allows SOLA to expand and evolve without cumbersome enterprise-wide revisions, giving it unparalleled reusability and growth potential.

    • Customization APIs

SOLA provides customization APIs that allow customers to add capabilities beyond the product’s existing feature set.  These APIs allow the user access to SOLA processing at various points in the SOAP stack so that processing can be manipulated by user specific application code.  These APIs also support custom security exits.  Custom APIs can be defined at the installation level or at the individual method level.

    • Orchestration

SOLA provides orchestration using BPEL (Business Process Execution Language for Web Services).  BPEL is an XML based standard for designing, defining, implementing, and deploying composite web services, including business logic, sequencing, exception handling and process decomposition. BPEL is supported by the SOLA run-time engine.

    • Dashboard

The SOLA dashboard allows you to keep an eye on your web services, regions and more with a graphic user interface that provides at-a-glance status information, as well as access to SOLA’s monitoring, audit and error logs.

    • XACML Authorization

SOLA allows you to create your own authorization protocols to suit the way your organization functions rather than forcing you to adapt to a rigidly defined authorization structure.

    SOLA Advantages

    • Publishes legacy applications as Web Services, allowing them to easily integrate with .Net, J2EE or any other development environment.
    • Can create web services from Commarea programs, 3270 transactions, stored procedures, Adhoc SQL and Callable APIs.
    • Inbound and outbound web services support (the mainframe can act as a web services server or a web services client).
    • Proven and Enterprise ready.
    • Requires no middle tier hardware or software, runtime runs entirely on the mainframe for improved performance and increased reliability.
    • WC3-compliant Assembler XML parser for superior performance and low parsing costs.
    • Easy to use and deploy – “one click” creation of web-services.
    • Single sign-on using LDAP or SAML 2.0.
    • Outbound services support for SSL/TLS and proxy.
    • Supports both http and MQ transport layers.
    • Eliminates the need for cross platform skills training (no Java or Visual Basic skills are required to publish Web Services from legacy applications using SOLA).
    • Includes comprehensive monitoring and error logging for easy problem diagnosis and resolution.
    • Integrated testing and debugging tools.
    • CICS 3.x Integration – If required, SOLA can be integrated directly into the CICS 3.x pipeline.

No coding is required to publish Web Services with SOLA. It is simple and easy to use with a minimal learning curve. An integrated test harness allows the developer to test and validate their Web Services with just a few mouse clicks.  Finally, SOLA is proven in extensive mission critical production systems today.

SOLA is already helping to achieve the pinnacle of application integration - reuse. Business functions previously isolated in legacy applications are now open for reuse by other applications in new and innovative ways.

Other solutions require extensive middleware (hardware and software). Although the initial cost of these solutions appears economical the ongoing support and management is cost prohibitive.

SOLA - Mainframe SOA - Enterprise SOA

Click here to view a print-ready version of this page

Enterprise SOA is more than just a jigsaw puzzle

As important as the essential components of enterprise SOA are, they are a single dimension of a more complex issue.  SOLA was designed from the ground up to address the entire spectrum of mainframe SOA issues.

Solid Foundation: building a successful mainframe SOA must start with a solid foundation.  The 9 essential components of enterprise SOA make for a good beginning, but SOLA goes far beyond.

Human Assets: what good is leveraging technology assets if you ignore human assets?  SOLA tasks the right people with the right jobs.
      • Mainframe developers expose mainframe applications as services
      • Distributed developers incorporate services into composite applications
      • Training, development and support costs can far exceed the cost of the solution itself

Scalability and Adaptability: a good solution should be flexible; it should be able to adapt to just about anyone’s enterprise standards, no matter how strict, and allow for unhindered growth.  SOLA is standards-based and built for the enterprise.  As its run time is entirely mainframe based, it inherits the mainframe’s legendary scalability and fault tolerance.

Streamlined Infrastructure: you shouldn’t have to integrate your integration.  A streamlined and efficient infrastructure reduces complexity and increases reliability.  It can also help lower costs due to standardization and simplified support.  SOLA was designed for optimum efficiency, from its mainframe run time to its batch support and ultra efficient parser, SOLA eliminates the “plumbing” that can handicap other solutions. It is also this efficiency that helps make SOLA the fastest and most cost effective product in the space.

Development: the development tool is the interface between the tool and the people that get the job done.  SOLA’s development environment is as easy to use as it is powerful.  Web services can be created in minutes with no programming or training required.  The development environment runs in a browser and features powerful web 2.0 capabilities such as drag and drop, tab based workspaces and dynamic indexed searches.  Because it is browser based, there is no workstation software to install and older workstations can be leveraged (attention to human assets and cost effectiveness at work).

Governance: industry experts believe that governance is the single most important issue facing the fledgling SOA community.  From diagnosing production outages to managing changes and meeting SLAs, governance is a non negotiable requirement in a viable SOA.  A solution has to either be governable by a third party tool or incorporate strong governance capabilities.  SOLA does both.  With WS-Security, WS-Policy, integrated monitoring, logging and auditing, and many more built in governance features, SOLA provides a comprehensive collection of governance and lifecycle management capabilities.  SOLA is also fully governable; its standards based design lends itself to simple and cost effective integration with third party governance solutions.

SOLA - Mainframe SOA - Performance and Reliability

Click here to view a print-ready version of this page

SOLA has been in production for five years – no production failures have been experienced.  To date, billions of transactions have been processed by SOLA.

SOLA includes a compliant non-validating parser (the SOLA DOM parser).  Extensive performance tests were conducted to determine the impact of parsing XML on a mainframe.  The results were as follows:

        • The SOLA assembler parser takes around 0.0001 CPU seconds to parse 1,000 bytes.
        • Parsing 1,000 bytes (a typical input XML message size) adds less than 1% to most transactions.
        • At a typical chargeback rate of $0.20 per CPU second, parsing 1,000 bytes would cost $0.000020. That amounts to a minuscule $20 to parse 1 million transactions.
        • SOLA is built for high performance and high transaction volume.  At Merrill Lynch SOLA runs up to 10 million transactions per day.  Over 1,000 Web Service operations are used by more than 60 mission critical applications.

To test the difference in performance between SOLA and CICS TS 3.2, we wrote a COBOL program containing various data types.  The goal of the program was to generate a large XML response to put both products through their paces.  When we attempted to import the program using CICS Web services assistant, the import failed because the program contained many unsupported data types.  SOLA imported the same program without any issues.

To make the comparison fair, we altered the program to remove the data types that IBM couldn’t handle, then imported the modified program using both Web services assistant and SOLA.  This program was similar to the original, but lacked some functionality because of IBM’s limitations.

We ran the program 1000 times in both environments:

IBM: 46.1 seconds for 1000 web service invocations, or 0.046 CPU seconds per call.

SOLA:  7.5 seconds for 1000 web service invocations, or 0.007 CPU seconds per call.

RESULT:  SOLA was approximately 615% faster than CICS TS v3.2.

SOLA – What makes it the most complete Mainframe SOA Solution?

Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an architectural methodology for the loose coupling and management of services.  Mainframe web services are a component of mainframe SOA.  SOLA goes beyond mainframe web services to offer every essential component of a mainframe SOA, enabling the mainframe to act as a first class participant in an enterprise wide SOA.

          SOLA Governance

SOLA is the only mainframe SOA product to offer closed-loop Governance automation.  A service is automatically governed from the point of creation because it inherits a security policy.  Policy, by means of WS-PolicyAttachment, is associated with the service though all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle.  It is not possible to create or run an ungoverned service.

On top of this, SOLA’s built in monitoring, logging and auditing capabilities, as well as its standards based architecture combine to make SOLA fully governable by external governance products like SOA Software’s Workbench.

Los Angeles, Calif., April 7, 2008SOA Software, the leading Integrated SOA Governance vendor announced the release of SOLA 6.0 (Service Oriented Legacy Architecture), a major update to its market-leading mainframe SOA Solution.

SOLA is the most complete mainframe Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) solution in the industry. SOLA solves today’s most critical problem, making mainframe applications part of an SOA in a cost effective manner. SOLA provides customers with a fast and easy process to expose mainframe applications as secure Web Services, and allows mainframe applications to consume Web Services. Using SOLA, customers can leverage billions of dollars of existing mainframe investments when building an enterprise SOA. The SOLA runtime environment runs entirely on the mainframe, eliminating the need for expensive, unreliable and unnecessary middleware. This coupled with SOLA’s Development Studio vastly increases developer productivity, providing faster time to market and lower application development cost. The combination of a highly optimized runtime, no middleware and improved productivity provide the lowest Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) in the industry.

SOLA eliminates the need to integrate multiple mainframe and distributed products/platforms to create an enterprise class SOA. Unlike alternative solutions that only offer one or two components of mainframe SOA, SOLA offers a complete SOA solution further reducing TCO.

SOLA’s high performance and low CPU overhead enable customers to run the world’s largest mainframe SOA implementations in the most cost effective manner. SOLA is the only product proven in enterprise implementations to handle high volume (10 million+) transactions per day in mission-critical mainframe SOA environments.

Innovative SOLA features such as One-Click service creation and an easy to use drag-and-drop interface deliver the only secure, standards-based and governable SOA product in the mainframe industry. SOLA provides mainframe end-to-end governance with WS-Security, WS-Policy, mainframe optimized registry, integrated monitoring, logging, auditing and near limitless scalability, all implemented on the mainframe. This makes SOLA the only solution for companies seeking secure, high-volume, mission-critical mainframe SOA.

            SOLA Advantages for mainframe SOA

            • Most comprehensive mainframe SOA solution on the market
            • Production proven track record in the Fortune 1000
            • Lowest TCO (and highest ROI) in the industry
            • SOLA is a Governed Service Platform, making it fully governable by SOA Software products like Workbench and Service Manager

SOA Software Certifies Neuron as a Governed Service Platform

Click here to view a print-ready version of this page

Los Angeles, Calif. April 29th, 2008 - SOA Software, a leading Integrated SOA Governance Automation vendor, today announced that it has certified the Neuron ESB from Neudesic as a Governed Service Platform.

Certified Governed Service Platform status means that customers can be confident that their platforms won’t compromise the fidelity of the governance systems and structures defined in an enterprise SOA program. The certification process ensures that Governed Service Platforms can implement and enforce governance policies proving reporting data to enable a closed-loop audit process.

“Governance Initiatives are rapidly gaining momentum amongst platform vendors, Governance solution providers, and end-user customers,” said Frank Martinez, Executive Vice President of SOA Software. “The addition of Neuron-ESB, as a Microsoft .NET and WCF based ESB to the list of Governed Service Platforms highlights the importance of this certification for platform vendors.”

Neudesic customers add SOA Software’s Integrated SOA Governance Automation solution to their Microsoft .NET and WCF based Neuron ESB to achieve the following benefits:

            • Compatibility: Ensure that services they identify, design and build using their Neuron ESB are relevant and consumable to applications they design, build and deploy using other technologies like IBM, Microsoft or Oracle, or buy from other vendors like SAP.
            • Visibility: Make services they expose from applications running on the Neuron ESB visible to and compliant with enterprise policies defined, enforced and audited across other platforms; and make services they design and build using other platforms like Microsoft and open source environments visible to and compliant with enterprise policies defined, enforced and audited across by their Neuron applications.
            • Demand Management: Promote and ensure consistent alignment between demand from service consumers and the supply of services through Consumer Contract Provisioning. Contracts specify the formal relationship between a consumer, or group of consumers, and a provider, or group of providers. They specify access rights and times, SLAs and capacity, and can be used to specify policy requirements.

The certification of Neuron shows the rapid growth of SOA Governance as a leading driver of SOA adoption. The Governed Service Platform status ensures that Neuron can be consistently governed along with other enterprise service platforms.

“Neuron-ESB 2.0 represents a significant evolution for the Microsoft Platform while addressing the Enterprise Service Bus needs of every customer running Microsoft Windows. Our technology allows businesses to effectively leverage their Microsoft investments to deliver real-time solutions,” stated Marty Wasznicky, Vice President of Neudesic. “Our product provides a new level of flexibility and ease of use that will help companies increase their productivity while reducing their development and operational costs. Moreover we’ve formed a strategic partnership with SOA Software and achieved certification as a Governed Service Platform. Our customers can be confident that Neuron-ESB will enhance the fidelity of their Governance initiatives.”

SOA Software’s SOLA celebrates 5 years of 100% availability

Click here to view a print-ready version of this page

Los Angeles, Calif., April 9, 2008SOA Software, a leading mainframe web services vendor, today announced that SOLA, its flagship mainframe SOA product, has reached the five year mark in running reliably extremely high volume production environments.  During this period SOLA has not been responsible for a single production outage, despite handling tens of millions of transactions every day.

SOLA runs the world’s largest mainframe SOA implementations.  A number of SOLA customers use it to run many millions of mainframe web services transactions per day, and many customers’ plans anticipate volume in the 20-30 million transactions per day range.

“Today marks five successful years of 100% availability, high volume production web services for our product.  SOLA was the first product to deploy production mainframe web services and it has the best track record of any mainframe SOA solution“ said Jim Crew, SOLA co-creator and Vice President of SOA Software, ”SOLA handles tens of millions of secure transactions every day and has never caused a production outage.”

SOLA is an enterprise class mainframe web services solution that seamlessly integrates the mainframe into a Service Oriented Architecture, with end-to-end governance and unlimited scalability.  With its run-time running exclusively on the mainframe, SOLA has proven to be an attractive solution for firms seeking secure, available, high-volume, mission critical mainframe integration with high performance and low CPU overhead.

SOLA owes its success in no small part to Merrill Lynch, where the product (then called X4ML) was created based on a set of uncompromising requirements for an enterprise-class mainframe web services solution and a lack of adequate solutions available in the market.  “SOLA has allowed us to simplify and modernize our environment, while allowing us to eliminate complex and expensive gateway servers” said Henry Tsang, Vice President of Merrill Lynch.  “What sets SOLA apart is that it offers integrated monitoring, logging, auditing, WS-Security and WS-Policy on the mainframe, all of which benefit from the mainframe’s performance, reliability and scalability while offering end-to-end transaction visibility.”

SOLA implements the entire SOAP stack on the mainframe, inheriting the mainframe platform’s legendary speed, reliability, scalability and manageability. SOLA keeps overhead to a minimum by implementing much of the SOAP stack in assembler.  Customers report that SOLA adds around 2 milliseconds elapsed time to a transaction.  The 2 milliseconds includes the complete SOAP stack, authentication, authorization, monitoring and SLA enforcement.  SOLA’s efficiency is an important competitive differentiator; other products can add 100 milliseconds or more to a transaction.

            No Last-mile security Issues
Running the SOAP stack on the mainframe offers significant advantages over competitors who run their processing on middle-tier gateways.  For example, SOLA’s standards based implementation of WS-Security and WS-Policy runs entirely on the mainframe using the integrated cryptographic coprocessors available on the zSeries.  This contrasts with other mainframe web services implementations which rely on partner products for security.  Those products run on middle-tier gateways, exposing customer transactions to “last-mile” security vulnerabilities.

            No Java on the Mainframe
SOLA’s assembler language SOAP stack implementation is so efficient that there’s only a small overhead when publishing a mainframe program as a fully secured, managed, monitored and governed Web Service. SOLA’s fully compliant DOM parser uses less general purpose CPU than an equivalent Java parser running on a zAAP – while taking less than 5% of the elapsed time.  This makes SOLA more efficient and much faster than products which use Java running on a zAAP to parse XML.

            Less Complex
Because SOLA offers a complete SOA solution there is no requirement to integrate multiple products when building an enterprise-class SOA incorporating the mainframe.  SOLA includes a “drag-and-drop” graphical development studio, an integrated UDDI registry, WS-Security, WS-Policy, monitoring, logging, a management console and dashboard, SLA management, BPEL, SAML, X509 Certificates, LDAP and Active Directory.  SOLA eliminates the complexity and expense of combining multiple products, such as CICS TS 3.x, WebSphere and RAD.

            Closed-Loop Governance Automation
SOLA is the only mainframe SOA product to offer closed-loop Governance automation. A service is automatically governed from the point of creation because it inherits a security policy.  Policy, by means of WS-PolicyAttachment, is associated with the service though all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle. It is not possible to create or run an ungoverned service.

Other features of SOLA include integration with enterprise change management, Global Dictionary, Logging, Auditing, Outbound SOAP requests, Batch support, Integration with external UDDI, version control, support for the Software Development Lifecycle, WSDL first and integration with SOA Management tools, making SOLA the only secure, standards-based, and Governable product in the space.

SOLA also offers XACML for authentication and a comprehensive identity mapping system that allows for the mapping of any credential (LDAP, etc) to a mainframe RACF ID.

Click here to view a print-ready version of this page

Los Angeles, Calif., April 7, 2008SOA Software, a leading Integrated SOA Governance Automation vendor, today announced that it has certified IBM WebSphere Process Server and WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus as Governed Service Platforms.  This allows customers to use WebSphere Process Server and WebSphere ESB to implement and enforce governance policies for enterprise services providing reporting data to enable a closed-loop audit process as part of their enterprise SOA.

Certified Governed Service Platform status means that customers can be confident that their platforms won’t compromise the fidelity of the governance systems and structures defined in an enterprise SOA program.

SOA Software’s Workbench and Service Manager ensure that WebSphere Process Server can facilitate and benefit from the core Integrated SOA Governance Automation best practices:

            • Trust & Management Mediation – provide last-mile security, metric collection and reporting, SLA monitoring and management, to ensure that services exposed by WebSphere Process Server are governed, managed, and secured.  Provide policy implementation and mediation to allow WebSphere Process Server to communicate with a wide range of mission critical business services exposed from non-IBM platforms.
            • Service Virtualization – conveniently allow WebSphere Process Server to expose services to partners, and consumer partner services
            • Governance Automation – automate the publishing of WebSphere Process Server services, providing lifecycle workflow with approvals, collaboration services, and consumer contract provisioning
            • Continuous Compliance and Validation - ensure the relevance, applicability and suitability of WebSphere Process Server services
            • Metadata Federation - ensure that WebSphere Process Server services are visible to, relevant, and consumable by other platforms - and make services from other platforms visible to, relevant and consumable by WebSphere Process Server.  Automatically discover services in Process Server and publish them into Workbench subject to governance policies
            • Change Impact Mitigation - ensure that changes to WebSphere Process Server services don’t cause major outages by maintaining consumer contracts
            • Uniform Policy Management - ensure that WebSphere Process Server services can be leveraged as first-class citizens throughout an enterprise SOA by complying with enterprise policies that are uniform across all platforms

SOA Software provides a fully functional Agent for Process Server.  The Agent deploys into the container hosting Process Server and provides a management application, a policy engine, and a handler mechanism.  The management application monitors Process Server’s management API for new services.  When it discovers a new service, depending on its policies it will either automatically install a mediation primitive into the mediation flow to intercept messages for processing by the policy engine, or simply register the service with Workbench. Policies are defined using the WS-Policy language and the policy engine discovers its policies using WS-MetadataExchange and reports metrics, usage and exceptions to the Workbench.

SOA Software also provides a fully functional Delegate in the form of a mediation primitive.  The Delegate deploys into mediation flows for WESB and WPS to abstract them from the location, transport and other policy representations of consuming services.

“We are pleased to announce the integration of our Integrated SOA Governance Automation products with WebSphere Process Server,” said Frank Martinez, executive vice president of SOA Software.  “The certification of WebSphere Process Server as a Governed Service Platform gives customers confidence that the enterprise adoption of WebSphere Process Server will preserve the fidelity of the governance models, structures and mechanisms supporting their enterprise SOA program.”

            SOA Software and IBM
IBM customers leverage SOA Software for seamless, heterogeneous SOA Governance, Security and Management integration with their IBM Middleware infrastructure to ensure interoperability across disparate partners and platforms.  SOA Software’s products provide uniform lifecycle and policy governance across all existing platform investments with standards support for Governance automation and trust enablement and mediation.

Los Angeles, Calif., March 17, 2008SOA Software, a leading Integrated SOA Governance Automation vendor, today announced that it has certified IBM WebSphere Message Broker as a Governed Service Platform. This certification allows customers to use IBM WebSphere Message Broker to implement and enforce governance policies for enterprise Web services providing reporting data to enable a closed-loop audit process as part of their enterprise SOA.

Certified Governed Service Platform status means that customers can be confident that their platforms won’t compromise the fidelity of the governance systems and structures defined in an enterprise SOA program.

SOA Software’s Workbench and Service Manager ensure that IBM WebSphere Message Broker can facilitate and benefit from the Integrated SOA Governance Automation best practices:

            • Trust & management mediation – provide last-mile security, metric collection and reporting, SLA monitoring and management, to make services exposed by IBM WebSphere Message Broker business-class.  Provide policy implementation and mediation enabling IBM WebSphere Message Broker to communicate with a wide range of mission critical business services exposed from any platform.

Recorded on October 31st, 2007 at the Microsoft 2007 SOA & Business Process Conference

Best Practices for Service-Oriented Architecture Governance
Frank Martinez, EVP Product Strategy, SOA Software
Marty Wasznicky, BizTalk Server Program Manager, Microsoft

Governance is the tail that wags the SOA dog.  An organization that deploys Web Services without a solid governance program is headed for serious trouble in terms of reliability, security, and cost.  While governance is a necessity for any IT endeavor, the open and potentially chaotic nature of SOA makes governance either a show stopper or a magic bullet for success, depending on how it is approached.

In this presentation, SOA Software’s Frank Martinez and Microsoft’s Marty Wasznicky discuss the best practices for Service-Oriented Architecture Governance, and how SOA Software’s products provide a comprehensive closed-loop SOA Governance solution.
