The API Gateway also enables enterprises to rapidly publish their internal services and APIs to a cloud hosted developer community, significantly reducing time and cost.
The SOA Software API Gateway is a virtual appliance that streamlines management, deployment, development and operation of APIs, enhancing security and regulatory compliance through authentication, authorization and audit capabilities. It provides central definition and management of security, routing, reliability, mediation, auditing and other operational governance policies across multiple instances. The API Gateway enables the fastest time to market for a comprehensive API solution that can be deployed as a single unit, on-premise, in-cloud or as a hybrid solution. Moreover, the same solution can be used to manage and secure SOA based services, minimizing the risk and cost for our enterprise customers.
The API Gateway transforms and mediates between XML and SOAP based services and JSON and REST without writing code. It also offers integrated process activity and scripting capabilities for sophisticated content mediation and orchestration, including the ability to execute JavaScript and other scripting languages natively within the gateway for message enrichment (such as call-outs and transformations) and mashups (new applications combining multiple backend services).
“The API Gateway allows organizations to quickly and cost-effectively develop, secure, manage and monitor their APIs in an increasingly connected world,” said Alistair Farquharson, chief technology officer at SOA Software. “Customers are now able to extend their business processes and data for consumption as APIs by leveraging our unified API Gateway’s unique ability to centrally secure and rapidly connect applications across platforms, devices and channels.”

SOA Software Attains Microsoft Gold ISV Certification
Microsoft and SOA Software Strategy provides Full SOA and API Lifecycle Governance
Los Angeles, CA – Apr 24, 2013 – SOA Software, a leading provider of Enterprise API Management and SOA Governance solutions, today announced that it has been recertified with Gold Independent Software Vendor (ISV)/Software Competency in the Microsoft Partner Network. As the technologies and strategies of the two companies evolve, SOA Software’s full lifecycle governance of service-oriented architecture (SOA) and APIs is proving to be an excellent fit for Microsoft’s cloud/on-premise hybrid strategy.
“Microsoft’s emphasis on cloud/on-premise hybrids intensifies the need for governance of Web services at every phase of the SOA/API lifecycle,” said Roberto Medrano, Executive VP of SOA Software. “Organizations that are extending their on-premise Microsoft-based SOA solution into the cloud invariably find that the openness of the cloud creates pressure to control Web services without reducing the agility of the overall system. That’s where we can help.”
Microsoft’s concerted push into the cloud, which stresses the advantages of creating hybrid cloud/on-premise solutions, has gained momentum in the last year. New offerings such as Office 365 and Windows Server 2012 leverage a combination of cloud and on-premise IT resources for enterprise benefit. Microsoft stalwarts such as Dynamics CRM are showcasing customer success with cloud/on-premise hybrids that offer unique return on investment by stretching existing infrastructure into new, flexible configurations.
The expansion of connectivity and points of origin for APIs and Web services in the Microsoft cloud/on-premise model creates fresh governance challenges, however. More points of policy definition and enforcement result in more opportunities for governance policies to fall apart, raising risk across SOA and API programs. SOA Software’s API & SOA governance suite for Microsoft offers a solution, enabling enterprises to manage all services, regardless of whether they are Microsoft-based or not, cloud-based or on-premise, across the complete service lifecycle. SOA Software’s Portfolio Manager enables governance of public cloud/private cloud/on-premise Microsoft Web services at the architecture planning stage. SOA Software Lifecycle Manager provides governance and policy definition for the development stage of the lifecycle, integrating with Microsoft Visual Studio, and Team Foundation Server. At runtime, SOA Software Service Manager and Policy Manager provide monitoring, management and policy enforcement for services running on Microsoft IIS & BizTalk Server as well as on Windows Communication Foundation (WCF). Semantics Manager - Standards and Metadata Management
Semantics Manager enables enterprises to define, find, understand, use, and exchange data by managing standards and metadata as organizational assets. It is built upon an industry-leading repository and governance platform that can support requirements through configuration, rather than hardcoded behavior requiring custom modification to adapt to changing requirements. Semantics Manager enables standards development organizations (SDO) to develop, manage, obtain and incorporate reviewer input, and distribute standards more efficiently. It also helps industry to implement standards faster and more effectively while automating and improving business processes.
Based on Object Management Group’s (OMG) Reusable Asset Specification (RAS), Semantics Manager’s metamodel definition infrastructure leverages the flexibility of declarative XML-based specifications to dynamically generate strongly-typed information models with full control over object type, object content and object-to-object associations. These generated models are presented to end users via a modern browser-based UI, giving them intuitive access to repository content organized in a format aligned with their user role.
Accompanying this highly flexible metamodel definition infrastructure, Semantics Manager provides a fully configurable governance process automation engine supporting the need for role-based control by object state. This engine gives repository administrators full control over object approval processes on a fine-grained basis, specifying type-specific processes with content cardinality rules (e.g., information is optional for an object in draft status and mandatory for an object in published status), inline validation policies (e.g., control over field value formats, conditional object content mandates based on associated content values) and role-based approval processes supporting any combination of parallel and sequential commenter and approver steps.
Semantics Manager addresses all of the following core issues around standards development and implementation efforts:
- How to create, maintain, govern and use standards in a consistent manner
- How to know what the impact of changes will be on other people, processes, or systems
- How to get maximum reuse out of existing data assets
- How to use standards to improve processes, rather than adding burden to them, and
- How to know that the data exchanged with others is being used or interpreted correctly
Semantics Manager Capabilities
Semantics Manager enables organizations to efficiently govern their data standards through:
Standards-based, model driven content control:
- Physical metamodel based on Object Management Group’s (OMG) Reusable Asset Specification (RAS)
- Strongly typed, configurable content metamodel based on ISO 11179 standard for metadata registries
- For BioPharma industry, base library that includes all CDISC Terminologies, CDASH 1.1, SDTM 1.2, BRIDG 3.1, and ISO 21090

Enabling the API Economy
Enterprises are increasingly making business applications available as APIs in order to drive business growth and expose new revenue and partnership opportunities, and ultimately to improve business effectiveness. Open APIs allow external developers to build applications that leverage core business capabilities. Enterprise APIs are offered to a more limited group to enable more sensitive B2B or B2E applications. Both enterprise and open APIs are typically built on a foundation of enterprise SOA services. As such, they require robust governance.
SOA Software’s Enterprise API Platform is the highest performing, most comprehensive API management solution on the market today. It is a secure, robust platform that companies can use to share their APIs with the growing app developer community, their partners, and customers. The platform manages, monitors and secures companies’ APIs, ensuring that these APIs deliver the level of service customers and partners require; that corporate and customer information and assets are secure; and that the integrity of the corporate brand is protected. For more details, please see http://www.soa.com/products/api-platform-as-a-service.
The SOA Software Open platform brings API providers and App developers together, offering easy access to powerful API Management capabilities combined with a social community in which developers collaborate to build dynamic, engaging apps with scalable APIs. The free SOA Software Open service allows users to manage up to 10 million API transactions per month, far higher than other solutions, and offers a powerful developer community platform unlike anything else in the industry. Developers can easily upgrade to SOA Software’s Enterprise API Platform either on-premise or as-a-Service if they want additional capacity, their own brand for their APIs, or a guaranteed SLA. Semantics Management - Efficiently Manage Data Lifecycle
In any industry where data is a major component for regulatory approval or compliance (e.g., Biotechnology/Pharmaceutical), regulators need to efficiently review and process this data while reducing the financial burden and effort of compliance to industry, in turn reducing the cost and risk to consumers.
To achieve these goals, many regulators have established data standards. However, as regulation and the number of standards increase, so does the time and effort it takes to develop, manage, and distribute these standards in a way that truly results in the benefits intended.
Not only do issues exist for standards development organizations (SDOs), but implementation of these standards are often very burdensome and expensive for industry due to their impact on business processes. As a result, organizations typically perform duplicate work to convert data to standardized formats after the fact for regulatory purposes to avoid such disruption to their business operations. This inefficient approach results in longer cycle times, higher costs, and lower quality data; the opposite of what was intended.
Solution - Semantics Management
Data standards alone are not enough to overcome these issues. Only through Semantic Interoperability (SI) can regulatory agencies and industry achieve benefits from these standards. Semantic Interoperability is the ability of computer systems to exchange data with an understood or common meaning of the data without human intervention or interpretation. By binding systems to robust common domain terminology produced and disseminated by SDOs (i.e., Semantics Management), industry can more efficiently implement end-to-end data lifecycle processes.
Some of the key benefits of semantics management include:
- Regulatory compliance regarding the use of data standards
- Decreased time to market, cost, and resources as a result of improved business processes
- Improved data quality
- Maximum reuse of existing metadata and data assets
- Significantly reduced need for human intervention with data exchange
- Knowing exactly where and how content is being used, and
- Understanding how changes to content affect other people, processes, and systems
SOA Software’s Semantics Manager is built upon an industry-leading repository and governance platform. It enables SDOs to develop, obtain and incorporate reviewer input, manage, and distribute standards more efficiently. It also helps industry to implement standards faster and more effectively while automating and improving business processes. Semantics Manager is like a virtual hub for data within your enterprise. It helps users to define, find, understand, use, and exchange data.

New Enterprise API Management Products, Partnerships and International Expansion Fuel Growth
LOS ANGELES – February 4, 2013 – SOA Software, a leading provider of Enterprise API Management and SOA Governance solutions, today announced a 52% increase in its 2012 revenues versus the prior year. With expansion into new international markets, the development of an enterprise API management solution, and deeper engagement with developers and strategic partners, the company realized a very successful year.
“This past year was one of incredible growth for us, in several ways,” said Paul Gigg, President and CEO of SOA Software. “We expanded into Europe, the Middle East and Africa, delivered the industry’s most reliable and usable enterprise API management product, and continued to serve customers with our leading API and SOA platform solutions. SOA Software Publishes eBook on Enterprise API Best Practices
Offers a Proven Approach to Building Successful Enterprise APIs
Los Angeles – November 27, 2012 – SOA Software, a leading provider of Enterprise API Management and SOA Governance solutions, today announced the publication of the eBook, Building Successful APIs. The eBook, which is available for immediate free download, provides a thorough look at what it takes to succeed with APIs in a large enterprise. SOA Software wrote and published the eBook based on its experience working with global corporations that are facing a transformation of IT requirements from rapidly evolving business alliances and mobile device proliferation.
According to Paolo Malinverno, Gartner Research VP, “The use of Web APIs is increasing even more, generally supporting new sales channels through mobile applications. This has made API management more popular as a new way of informing and selling to end customers. In particular, Type A organizations keen on exploring new ways to connect with their customers increasingly equate a Web channel to a new business opportunity; for them, having good API management is initially just a way of opening a new opportunity, and evolves into an advanced way of collecting customer behavior data.” [ι]
The need to create new revenue streams and integrate with an ever-shifting set of partners and applications, especially in this mobile era, puts pressure on IT to create and manage APIs. Daniel Sholler, Gartner Research VP, puts the challenge in perspective: “RESTful APIs help organizations integrate with partners and suppliers, lower costs, speed execution and reach new markets. Architects and application managers must follow good designs and best practices to create effective APIs,” he said. [ii]
“The eBook addresses an information gap in how to build successful APIs,” said Roberto Medrano, Executive Vice President, SOA Software. “While there are some resources for people developing consumer-facing APIs, enterprises require a different approach and more information to produce APIs. This book gives them much-needed information about building APIs in the enterprise context.”
The eBook shares proven best practices that enable businesses to realize success from APIs and ensure appropriate security and system management or running up unsustainable costs. Taking a holistic, integrated approach, it blends technology and business-level issues that affect API development.
The eBook covers the following conceptual topics:
- Creating awareness of the challenges and opportunities inherent in APIs.
- Determining the business requirements that drive API development.
- Understanding what the API does.
- Creating an infrastructure and platform to host APIs.
- Describing changes needed by IT and business to successfully launch and operate an API.
- Supporting a development community for the API.
The eBook can be downloaded at http://www.soa.com/api-ebook.

SOA Software Launches Industry’s First Enterprise API Platform
Platform transforms business potential with API Management and Developer Community Management via on-premise, Enterprise and Open PaaS, and hybrid deployments
Santa Clara, CA [Cloud Expo]. – Nov 5th, 2012 – SOA Software, a leading provider of Enterprise API Management and SOA Governance solutions today announced the launch of the first Enterprise API PlatformTM, to help enterprises reach new channels and gain business advantage, throughout all stages of the API lifecycle. The SOA Software Enterprise API Platform is the first solution to address enterprise requirements across the entire API lifecycle, with planning, development, runtime and community management capabilities. With this solution enterprises can finally take advantage of the opportunities APIs present while protecting their security and brand integrity.
SOA Software’s Enterprise API Platform is the first platform to address the API needs of large enterprises:
- It offers support for the full API lifecycle from planning and development through operations and community management
- It is enterprise-class – SOA Software has been delivering software and services solutions to large enterprise IT for years and our products meet enterprise requirements, including security, integration with existing infrastructure, performance and reliability, and much more
- It creates a Social Developer Community – other solutions offer API or Developer portals, but they don’t provide the social aspects to drive the network effect for API and App promotion across all developers in a community
- It enables federation between enterprise and Open communities allowing enterprise customers to promote their APIs through an open API marketplace
- It offers multiple deployment options – the platform is available as on-premise software, managed hosted software, Open (free) PaaS, Enterprise PaaS and a hybrid of these choices
Other solutions only address a small sub-section of the overall requirements; focusing solely on API monitoring, or API security with no developer community capabilities; or offering only cloud or on-premise deployment options but not both. None of the other vendors in the market offer an adequate solution for managing the lifecycle of APIs, this is critical for any serious API initiative, especially for large enterprises with brands to protect. Furthermore, other solutions typically ignore existing investments in SOA platforms and SOA Governance despite the fact that most enterprise APIs will be built on top of existing SOA services. The Enterprise API Platform provides a comprehensive solution addressing all of these requirements and offering optional seamless integration with existing SOA Governance infrastructure and services to ensure end-to-end security, monitoring, management and impact analysis.
SOA Software’s Enterprise API Platform is designed to allow organizations to meet strong privacy policies and comply with SEC requirements, the Frank Dodd Act, the Information Protection Act, the Safeguards Rule and other regulatory requirements commonly used to protect information. It offers integration with enterprise identity and security infrastructure, enabling API security models including OpenId and OAuth. This ensures that App developers and end users remain subject to existing security and privacy policies and requirements.
“The SOA Software Enterprise API Platform’s powerful combination of API Management and an innovative social Developer Community will drive developer adoption and open new business channels,” said Kin Lane, API Evangelist. “This unique solution enables customers to manage the entire lifecycle of their APIs and promote them across new or existing groups of developers.”
The Enterprise API Platform™ is available as an on-premise software solution, as-a-service, via an Open developer community as-a-service, or using a combination of any of these options. For example, a customer could choose to run the lifecycle management components of the solution as on-premises software, use the commercial PaaS offering to host and manage their APIs, and federate with the Open developer community to publish their public APIs to an established group of App developers. The deployment options are:
- On-premise software – Deploy all or part of the Enterprise API Platform in your own datacenters. The platform includes SOA Software’s industry-leading Community Manager, Portfolio Manager, Lifecycle Manager, Policy Manager, and Service Manager.
- Managed hosting – SOA Software will host your software solution in a private managed datacenter allowing you to take advantage of rapid start up and ease of maintenance while maintaining control of your solution and protecting your security and brand integrity.
- Enterprise API Platform-as-a-Service – Take advantage of the industry’s most robust API and Developer Community Management capabilities offered as a service running across a global network of enterprise-class datacenters.
- Open API Developer Platform – Publish your own APIs or connect with existing APIs through the free, public Open community.
The Enterprise API Platform™ provides a rich set of API Management capabilities to ensure the security, performance and availability of APIs, together with a social developer community solution for promoting and supporting the APIs and driving developer adoption. It provides end-to-end management of the API lifecycle, helping you make sure that you build the right APIs, build them the right way, and make sure that they are behaving correctly.
“Our Enterprise API Platform offers customers for the first time a game changing technology solution that will help drive the adoption of their APIs in highly competitive markets,” said Alistair Farquharson, CTO of SOA Software. “We see the creation and nurturing of robust developer communities as critical to API success”
The new SOA Software’s Enterprise API Platform™ includes SOA Software’s industry-leading Community Manager, Portfolio Manager, Lifecycle Manager, Policy Manager, and Service Manager products. Key features include:
- Developer Community - Take advantage of the viral power of the web with a solution that provides a connecting point where you can manage, share and promote your APIs in a secure, scalable environment. You can manage your own developer community, or plug-in to communities that already exist.
- API Lifecycle Management – Define your API strategy according to business goals, maximize benefits and minimize risk, and automate the heavy lifting to help you build and run your APIs.
- API Publishing – Publish your API and define the API at whatever level of detail you choose, using privacy settings to determine whether or not you want the platform to index your API content (name, description, docs, discussions and tickets) so that developers can easily find it, or find supporting information to help them use it.
- API Proxies - Proxy your API to add security, monitoring, provisioning, QoS management and more. Or simply use the Open developer community to provide the social and search features you need.
- Documentation – Leverage a dynamic documentation framework to build interactive documents for your API, create and upload your own documents, or use a combination of the two.
- API Security – Secure your APIs via a wide array of authentication schemes, standards, and token types, protecting sensitive data while allowing access to authorized Apps and users. This includes comprehensive support for OAuth and other security standards, with deep integration with existing enterprise security solutions.
- Traffic Monitoring - See how your API or App is performing and where your traffic is coming from with our real-time dashboard, historic charts and reports.
- QoS Management - Ensure quality-of-service for your APIs, managing quotas and service-levels for individual Apps.
- App Management & Provisioning - Manage which applications can use your APIs, and how much traffic they can consume. This includes managing the App to API provisioning workflow, sandbox and production endpoint access, legal agreement acceptance and per App QoS policies.

SOA Software CTO Stresses API Management in the Cloud
Alistair Farquharson Advocates API Management Best Practices at Cloud Expo Session
LOS ANGELES – NOVEMBER 1, 2012 – Alistair Farquharson, CTO of SOA Software, a leading provider of Enterprise API Management and SOA Governance solutions, will be delivering a presentation on Best Practices of API Management at the 11th Cloud Expo at the Santa Clara Convention Center. Farquharson’s session will focus ways that IT departments can support business objectives through APIs that open access to core information systems to external developers.
Application Programmer Interfaces (APIs) expose enterprise systems to developers, including distributed, unknown third parties that create apps such as those that work on mobile devices. The goal of enterprise API management is to enable the business to realize success from APIs without inadvertently creating security and system management problems or running up unsustainable costs.
Farquharson’s session, Best Practices of API Management, draws on his extensive experience at SOA Software working with large organizations to manage their APIs. The presentation will apply lessons learned from running an SOA, including:
- How effective management of enterprise APIs actually begins at the design and build stages of the API life cycle:
- Planning the API
- Designing the API
- Building the API
- Sharing the API
- How to focus on key areas of concern for APIs:
- Security
- Policy definition and enforcement
- Quality of Service (QoS)
- Monitoring
Enabling the API Economy
Enterprises are increasingly making business applications available as APIs in order to drive business growth and expose new revenue and partnership opportunities, and ultimately to improve business effectiveness. Open APIs allow external developers to build applications that leverage core business capabilities. Enterprise APIs are offered to a more limited group to enable more demanding and subtle B2B or B2E (employee) applications. Both enterprise and open APIs are typically built on a foundation of enterprise SOA services. As such, they require robust governance.

Repository Manager renamed Lifecycle Manager
As of October 2012 - we have renamed Repository Manager to Lifecycle Manager to better reflect its role in Enterprise API Management and SOA Governance.
Lifecycle Manager enables enterprises to understand what services and other software assets exist, where they’re located and how each fits into a company’s business and technical landscape. By providing a context for understanding and assessing existing software assets, Lifecycle Manager serves to automate the path to SOA.
Lifecycle Manager is an industry-leading Development Governance platform that automates machine- and role-based signoffs across the software development lifecycle. Development Governance occurs as a service moves through the various phases of the software development lifecycle. Without development governance, SOA initiatives will fail to deliver agility to the enterprise - the core value of SOA. Enterprises must be able to track all of the components of SOA, changing them as needed while maintaining a clear understanding of underlying interdependencies. This holistic perspective can only be achieved through effective development governance.
Lifecycle Manager’s strong integration with leading application development environments, federation with all major service registries and extensive integration with Policy Manager enables customers to rapidly develop, govern and deploy services and their supporting assets within the SOA service lifecycle. Lifecycle Manager is used by Fortune 500 customers to drive application agility and reduce cost and risk in their SOA deployment.
Experience has demonstrated that it is 30 times less expensive to make a modification or enhancement during a software asset’s development versus when that asset is deployed. The loosely-coupled nature of SOA in particular demands effective development governance, and the most effective way to discover, access and govern services and other software assets is with SOA Software’s Lifecycle Manager.
Lifecycle Manager’s service development governance platform addresses core issues for any SOA project or reuse initiative:
- What legacy assets are needed to facilitate a transformation to SOA?
- How do I leverage my open source, IBM and Microsoft based application development tools as we create, use and manage our services?
- Is there an easy and effective way to manage and govern the multiple repositories that exist in my enterprise?

Lifecycle Manager Capabilities:
Development Governance
Lifecycle Manager enables enterprises to manage their heterogeneous asset types from a single source. These assets can include services, components (.NET, J2EE, CORBA), legacy systems, and/or knowledge assets, such as patterns and best practices, used by development teams.
- With Smart Controls, organizations can easily control the service production and consumption process from requirement definition to development.Service consumption processes can be defined to control access to sensitive artifacts until approval is granted, minimizing developer access to rogue, and untraceable services.
- With Asset Relationship Visualization, users can quickly and easily understand asset to asset relationships via graphical representation. Viewing such relationships in an impact analysis process helps users understand how Enterprise Architecture architecture relates to IT development projects.
- Lifecycle Managereffortlessly shows graphical models representing business and other relevant domains. Model sourcesinclude Visio and UML diagrams, HTML-based graphics and models generated from Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF) - based content.
- Lifecycle Manager’s Eclipse-based Configuration Manager allows users to drag and drop development governance rules to meet the needs of their project or line of business. Administrators can easily specify governance policies ranging from a simple, single sign-off approval policy to one that has multiple levels of sign-off andautomated validation points.
Strong Federation with Leading Service Registries
- Support for native federated repositories allows organizations to share assets around the world, while tightly controlling how services are created, viewed and consumed.
- Lifecycle Manager’s federations with leading service registries, including HP SOA Systinet, IBM WSRR and TIBCO ActiveMatrix, automatically synchronize service definitions, metadata and governance states both to and from the run-time environment. This is unique in the market and provides the customer granular control of their various registries from a single point of control, adding consistency and automation to their development governance.
- With Lifecycle Manager’s Asset Import Center, users can scan UDDI V2+, HP Systinet, IBM WSRR and TIBCO ActiveMatrix based registries for commonly used services, easily extracting them into a governed service lifecycle process. Once in Lifecycle Manager, these services can be governed based on user requirements for enterprise service deployments; reducing the risk of application failure, security exposure or other application stability issues caused by ungoverned or rogue services.
Deploy and Manage Assets and Services Effectively
- Lifecycle Manager can automatically invoke compliance policy validations implemented in Policy Manager. The combination of Lifecycle Manager and Policy Manager allows users to replace what was previously a time-consuming ad-hoc exercise with a scalable, automated governance process.
- From Lifecycle Manager, users can launch software artifacts such as executable modules, WSDL files, models and documentation, into the appropriate development tool. Lifecycle Manager’sAnySource Artifact Adapter hides tedious access methods from users, improving the ease of use for artifacts stored in other systems of record.
Discover Assets and Services Collaboratively
- Lifecycle Manager’s discovery engine offers capabilities ranging from simple keyword searches to sophisticated, model-based searches.
- Active Design allows business analysts to create a persistent search specification from a business process model. Developers can then add technical criteria to this specification. This ability to easily define joint requirements also ensures that created applications meet business needs.

Community Manager - API Developer Community Platform

Community Manager™ is a sophisticated developer community product to help enterprises attract, manage, and support the developers that build Apps using their APIs.
Community Manager provides an extensive set of social capabilities to promote the creation of a community of developers either inside or outside the enterprise, or a combination of both. These developers collaborate to form an innovation engine to drive new channels and improve existing business processes. The network-effect of the social capabilities enable a community commons model for social contribution to the APIs themselves through support and documentation, and to the Apps the developer community creates.
Community Manager unites API providers and App developers through a single common community. It supports a range of different roles, enabling interactions between API developers, administrators, and operations along with App developers and project managers to promote idea sharing, advice and guidance, and technical support for APIs and Apps. Community Manager is designed from the ground using social principles to create an entirely new class of enterprise API management solution allowing API Providers to publish, document, promote and support their APIs, and Apps Developers to find, easily consume and get support for the APIs their Apps use.
Community Manager offers a sophisticated web-based UI that leverages the Community Platform API exposed by SOA Software’s Enterprise API Platform. It delivers a powerful set of new capabilities to customers:
User Self-Service
Community Manager allows users to create their own accounts (subject to optional approvals) with appropriate email confirmation and password policies. User management capabilities include:
- Single-sign-on with common social platforms including Facebook, Twitter and Google
- Integration with enterprise IAM systems including Microsoft Active Directory, CA SiteMinder and Oracle Access Manager to facilitate enterprise account management
- Avatar management with local avatar upload, and integration with Gravatar and the provided avatars from the social login providers
Social Interaction Model
Community Manager manages a range of different resource types including APIs, Apps, Users, and Groups. Each resource has its own Board providing a single location for finding information, alerts, discussions, trouble tickets and workflow requests about that resource. Users have their own Board, and also have a Dashboard that aggregates all of the activity on the Boards of any resources they are interested in into a single newsfeed. Users register their interest in a resource by choosing to follow it. This social interaction model enables:
- Developer and User support - users can open tickets on a resource, e.g. to get help with an issue they are having with an API, and any other user who is following that resource can respond to the ticket. This can considerably reduce the support burden on API providers.
- Idea sharing - any user can start or respond to a discussion about any resource, e.g. users can make suggestions for new features for an API, or provide ideas for new Apps
- Staying informed - having chosen to register interest in a resource, e.g an API, the user will see an recent activity from that resource in their Dashboard
- Workflow interactions - all workflow interactions, e.g. requests for an App to consume and API, or for a user to join a Group happen in the context of the Board and are reflected on the Dashboards of the relevant users. These interactions are subject to role-based privileges and will only be visible to resource administrators and the affected users.
User Dashboard and Notifications
As a key part of the social interaction model, each user has their own newsfeed in the form of their dashboard. They can also choose through their profile configuration to be notified for each type of dashboard activity, and can even choose how they want to be notified. Notifications will always appear in their personal navigation construct telling them how many notifications they have outstanding, with a hover behavior showing them the most recent.
Ratings and Reviews
Community Manager provides a social ratings and reviews system allowing users to rate or review resources. It presents the ratings summary as part of the search results and displays the ratings detail and list of reviews in the resource details. This helps users decide if they want to use a particular API or not, and can help API providers and App team leads figure out what they need to improve.
Support, Forums and Collaboration
Community Manager provides discussion forums in the form of the resource Boards. This means that every resource (API, App, Group, User etc) gets its own forum for discussions, tickets, alerts, and requests. Users can visit the Board on demand, or can choose to follow the resource in which case any activity on the Board will be presented in the user’s personal dashboard. The forums support:
- Discussions - a way that users can ask questions, make comments, and interact with others. Other users and administrators can respond to discussions, providing an ideal means to establish dialog in the context of a resource.
- Tickets - users can raise a trouble ticket on a resource allowing resource administrators and other users to respond to and resolve the ticket. The ticket is really a special form of discussion requiring the user to enter certain data, and providing a status for the ticket. Tickets can also be integrated with existing enterprise trouble ticket management systems.
- Alerts - resource administrators can post an alert to inform anyone following their resource of an important event. Alerts could be used to announce a new version, a planned outage, or even to inform users of a current outage providing details of an expected resolution.
- Requests - all workflow actions, e.g. Group membership requests, API Access requests, etc, take the form of request Board items. These are a special type of item that will appear on the Board of both the requesting resource (e.g an App) and the requested resource (e.g. a Group or an API). The request is visible only to the resource administrators involved in both ends of the request, and is used to track the status of the request over time.
Search and Search-engine Integration
Community Manager is a search driven system. Every aspect of every resource (name, description, documents, reviews, etc) and Board item (discussions, tickets, alerts) is continually indexed to create an incredibly easy to find anything you need. This helps in some really important ways:
- Finding APIs - the simple search mechanism makes it incredibly easy to find the API you’re looking for. Just by entering “cooking” into the search window you’ll find any API or App with the word cooking in a tag, or any other text field (including in it’s documents).
- You can narrow down your results by using the type filters once you have your initial results.
- To make things even easier you can sort by popularity, most recent, and other sort algorithms.
- The results present useful summary information including resource type, name, description and rating, and for APIs it will even tell you how many Apps are using this API.
- Getting Help - because all the tickets and discussions are indexed, if you’re having trouble using an API (or any other resource), you can just search using a description of the issue you’re having, and can find out quickly if anyone has run into this before, and if so, how did they resolve it.
The Enterprise API Platform search index can also be easily externalized and published to a public or enterprise search engine like Google. This means that anything in your search index can easily be found using your user’s current search vehicles. This is critical for supporting the publication of your APIs, and facilitating their support.
Social Platform Integration
Community Manager provides a social platform for your APIs, and also supports integration with the most popular social platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+. This allows you to promote your APIs and Apps across your existing social networks, and drive the viral marketing of your resources.
Development Groups and Team Management
A really important aspect of the Enterprise API Platform is its ability to serve as a collaboration engine for Developers working together to build Apps and APIs. Contrary to market perception, most commercial (and certainly enterprise) App development is not undertaken by an individual developer working in their parent’s garage. Community Manager allows developer and development managers to create teams of peers who can collaborate on their API consumption aspects of their App. They can use private forums to share ideas and discuss issues, and can share the responsibilities of provisioning and managing their App’s API usage.
Developers can invite each other to participate in teams, and in using the system as a whole, driving viral growth through the social network effect.
Integrated App and API lifecycle management and provisioning
Community Manager is a dynamic environment, where the actions that are agreed as part of the workflow process have a real-world impact. Users can request access to an API on behalf of their App - accepting relevant legal agreements and selecting from pre-defined policies - initiating a workflow process with optional approval and activation steps from the administrators of the API and App. The default workflow provides for:
- Automatic approval and activation of requests to a sandbox API endpoint
- API administrator approval required for access to production endpoints
- App administrator activation required for production access - this allows the App administrators to request access to multiple production APIs, but only switch over when they are ready for all changes to occur simultaneously.
- API administrators can suspend and reactivate, or even cancel an Apps access to their API.
- API and App administrators can use the workflow requests as discussion objects to engage in dialog about the way that Apps are consuming the APIs, e.g. to discuss abusive, or badly structured use of an API.
Private and Public API & App Management
There is almost a religious debate about the idea that all APIs have to be “Open APIs”, i.e. available to any developer to do whatever they like with. The market reality shows that there are far more high-value use-cases for Enterprise APIs, supporting B2B and B2E (Employee) use-cases. The main capability required to support Enterprise APIs is API privacy settings. Community Manager allows API Administrators to:
- Set an API version as private - a private API version has a number of attributes:
- It will be added to the search index with a limited scope, so that only invited users can find it
- Only invited users will be authorized to view it, even if they are able to find its URL
- Only authorized users will see Board items about the private version(s) in the API Board
- Invite users to be part of the group(s) that can view and request access to the API version
- Create multiple different groups, each of which can see their own posts and users, but who cannot see users or posts from other groups
All of the API privacy capabilities also apply to Apps, allowing users to create public Apps that they can promote and market, or private Apps to support beta or development uses, or for sensitive business applications.
API Documentation
Community Manager allows API administrators to upload and manage API documentation and table of contents. It keeps track of versions and allows for rollback if needed. The table of contents is displayed to users as part of the API navigation process along with other key information.
Downloads - Sample code, SDKs
Community Manager manages downloads, allowing administrators to add SDKs, and sample code to make life easier for App developers to consume their API. At the end of the day, the key to the success of any API will be to ensure that it delivers business value and is as easy to use as possible.

According to Gartner API Management and SOA Governance are converging into a consolidated space called Application Services Governance.
Application Services Governance provides the tools to help you make sure that you deliver APIs and SOA together to drive your company to meet its business strategy more quickly, more completely, or more effectively.
To learn more about how APIs and SOA work together click here or check out our blog.
The diagram below shows how API Management relates to SOA Governance. As you can see SOA Governance includes lifecycle governance and run-time management, API Management adds community management and leverages a lot of the run-time capabilities and some of the lifecycle capabilities of SOA Governance.

We can’t take credit for this diagram, it is loosely based on work from Gartner. We have intentionally simplified the original concept, and as such take the blame for any inaccuracy or imprecision.
Agility
SOA Software’s Application Services Governance solution helps you better respond to the changing business environment, bringing new products to market faster, and allowing IT to better align with business requirements with:
- End-to-end planning - Improve time to market by making sure that internal infrastructure and services are ready when your APIs need to use them.
- Change management - Make sure that agility doesn’t come at the cost of stability by effectively managing change across SOA assets and services and APIs.

Enabling the API Economy
Enterprises are increasingly making business applications available as APIs in order to drive business growth and expose new revenue and partnership opportunities, and ultimately to improve business effectiveness. Open APIs allow external developers to build applications that leverage core business capabilities. Enterprise APIs are offered to a more limited group to enable more sensitive B2B or B2E (employee) applications. Both enterprise and open APIs are typically built on a foundation of enterprise SOA services. As such, they require robust governance.
SOA Software Atmosphere is the highest performing, most comprehensive API management solution on the market today. Atmosphere provides a secure, robust platform that companies can use to share their APIs with the growing app developer community, their partners, and customers. SOA Software Automates Security and Provisioning for IBM WebSphere DataPower
DataPower Customers benefit from centralized governance of business transactions
Los Angeles, CA. – September 24, 2012 – SOA Software, a leading provider of SOA governance, cloud and enterprise API management products, announced today that it is releasing a new version of its Policy Manager software with expanded security features for IBM WebSphere DataPower. The new product greatly simplifies Datapower administration by automating complex security and provisioning scenarios. This lowers the total cost of ownership, speeds up service deployment, and lowers risk.
Security contracts are a foundational requirement for any SOA infrastructure, as they help to ensure that the massive number of complex transactions between consumers and providers are managed effectively. Policy Manager allows non-technical users to manage the security and other aspects of these transactions through the automation of contract enforcement through SOA Software’s DataPower governance solutions.
Enterprises use DataPower to expose services that ultimately create new relationships with their customers and partners, and contracts govern these relationships. With SOA Software’s Policy Manager for DataPower, customers can now govern these relationships on the DataPower appliance in a secure, automated, cost effective, and efficient manner.
“Enterprises are using DataPower to expose services that create new relationships with their customers and partners.” said Alistair Farquharson, CTO SOA Software. “Without centralized contract-based management to govern these relationships, enterprises are left with error-prone, manual, and ultimately unmanageable methods for provisioning and enforcing these relationships on the DataPower platform.”
The SOA Software team undertook the enhancement of security features for DataPower working from the premise that an SOA is fundamentally contract based. With this release, users will be able to take advantage of workflow-driven contract definition and enforcement within an overall policy-driven approach to SOA security for DataPower. Policy Manager now also removes the need for security integration to be manually coded into the DataPower appliance, which reduces a major security risk in the process. Coding, specialized configuration for security, and lengthy implementation projects for securing Web services on DataPower are no longer needed. Other security upgrades to Policy Manager for DataPower include automated configuration of industry standard WS-Security Policy built in support for X509 authentication and augmentation of DataPower error processing to support SOA level fault processing.
Policy Manager for IBM WebSphere Data Power’s support for deploying standards-based WS-Security Policy from Policy Manager to the DataPower appliance is fully integrated with DataPower’s AAA policies and DataPower’s built in WS-Security Policy support to enable robust and comprehensive security use cases. With these features customers can easily implement highly secure DataPower service interactions across a wide number of services, consumers, and provider organizations.
SOA Software is a longtime IBM Partner offering specialized solutions for DataPower. Deep integration with IBM WebSphere DataPower appliances provides customers with the ability to control the DataPower Appliance directly from the Policy Manager console, without the need to duplicate configuration manually. This provides customers with a ‘one-click’ management strategy leveraging DataPower as the runtime and the SOA Software’s Policy Manager as the source of service and policy information as well as the reporting console for the monitoring data. SOA Software’s Policy Manager is unique in its ability to manage the catalog of services, drive policy definition and distribution, and collect and display monitoring data for the DataPower devices, which provides end-to-end policy enforcement and transaction monitoring

Enterprise APIs
The Enterprise API is a concept we began to discuss in our blog entry: Enterprise APIs - APIs are not just for the cool kids. Quoting from this blog post - “Much of the discussion around APIs tends to center on the well-known APIs published by “cool” companies like Facebook, Twitter and Google. Although these high-profile enterprises do show remarkable innovation, the fact is that it’s not just the household names who can use APIs to expand their business capabilities.
Enterprise APIs have become essential tools for creating innovation both within a company and to outside developers. They can not only fuel growth, but also give enterprises a competitive edge over those who don’t have APIs…...
....A business doesn’t have to be a Netflix or a Google to see similar benefits. Enterprise APIs create a range of opportunities, both internally and externally. They can make systems more flexible, drive growth, deliver services in a customized way, and allow for scalability with more ease. They impact how software is developed behind the firewall, and how that software is viewed by customers.
It’s not just social media outlets or business-to-consumer sites that can reap numerous rewards from APIs. In many ways, the API is poised to be a more important channel than the web site for most enterprises (more on that in an upcoming blog post). As Lane notes on his site, API Evangelist, businesses operating a decade ago were still working to understand the importance of having a website. He writes, “Today, businesses need to understand the importance of the API.”
By sparking creativity and innovation both inside and outside the company, APIs create the potential to make any enterprise into one of the ‘cool kids.’”
A successful API program is about much more than simply throwing an API from a business Application out onto the Internet and hoping that developers will find it. An API is a product that represents your business and brand, and has a lifecycle like any product. You have to make sure you’re building the right API; building it so that it will meet the needs of the developers and applications that will consume it; using effective operational management and security mechanisms to make sure that the API is behaving correctly, and then you have to promote and support your API as you would any other product. This image shows how APIs represent the tip of the enterprise iceberg, and will almost inevitably rely on having an solid internal SOA infrastructure, and yes, this means having an SOA Governance solution in place, as well as an effective API Management solution that addresses the entire API lifecycle.

API Operations
Ideally you’ve used an API Planning solution to decide which API(s) to build and which enterprise assets it/they will rely on. You’ve then used an API Development solution to make sure that you’ve built your API(s) in such a way that it/they are easy for developers to work with and can meet the needs of the application that will consume them. Now it’s time to deploy your API and make sure that it’s running as you intended. It has to be secure, reliable, resilent, robust, and generally meet performance and service-level goals.
This is where your API Operations solution comes in. Most solutions will involve hosting your API in a purpose built API proxy that can handle all of the non-functional requirements for you. It’s pretty common for Enterprise APIs to be built using SOAP services inside the firewall, hosted in a DMZ resident proxy that exposes the service functions as RESTful APIs, often using JSON content to facilitate mobile consumption.
Many vendors will refer to their API Operations products as API Management, but an API Management solution is a much broader platform providing a comprehensive set of capabilities that span the entire API lifecycle.
Your API Operations solution needs to deliver a number of key capabilities including:
- Mediation - the ability to easily create multiple different types of API endpoint from a single internal service. The most common mediation type for APIs will be to create a single RESTful endpoint supporting XML and JSON content from an internal SOAP service.
- Security Policy Enforcement & Implementation - this is a huge area covering a massive range of functions, but in a nutshell your API Operations solution needs to protect your API from external attacks and integrate seamlessly with your internal security models and infrastructure.
- Quota Policy Enforcement - a key role of your API operations solution is to allocate your API’s capacity across the various consumer applications and application classes, while protecting your internal services from intentional or accidental overuse and abuse.
This where SOA Software’s API Manager comes in. API Manager is a high-performance, multi-protocol messaging intermediary. It uses a service virtualization model to expose API endpoints that a fully abstracted from the internal enterprise services and applications that provide the business functions being delivered as APIs. This abstraction includes offering different protocols and standards, security models and tokens, message exchange patterns and more. API Manager provides comprehensive declarative mediation capabilities leveraging Atmosphere Manager for all of its configuration. SOA Software’s Community Manager relies heavily on API Manager for operational enforcement of actions and decisions, and for the collection of metrics, usage data and recorded messages.
API Development with Atmosphere
Once you have identified what APIs you want to build, ideally using an API Planning solution, you have to make sure that you build your API in such a way that you can be sure it will meet your current and future needs.
API Development solutions will often extend and rely on existing development governance solutions m which are an important part of an Integrated SOA Governance Automation solution. Development governance marshals an asset through the development process that typically spans the design, development, testing and staging phases of its software development lifecycle. It typically includes a workflow mechanism to approve migration, policy compliance validation, and a clear separation (logically, physically, or both) between lifecycle stages.
SOA Software’s Lifecycle Manager provides a purpose-built API Development solution as well as the industry-leading development governance solution.
Development governance is the realm traditionally occupied by registry and repository vendors, although it requires much stronger repository capabilities and much broader integrations with development environments (IDEs and SCMs tools), federation with other registries and much stronger service, standards and taxonomy support than most repositories offer.
Development Governance solutions depend heavily on Policy Governance for compliance policy definition, management, and validation. They use policies to determine the relevance, and suitability of services at each lifecycle stage, and to determine if assets meet enterprise standards and guidelines before they can promoted to the next stage of the lifecycle. For example for a service to move from design to development the enterprise may require that there is a design document in the repository, the service has a WSDL, the services is categorized appropriately, and perhaps even that there are registered consumers waiting for the service.
The Development Governance process can often be initiated by the creation of a candidate service from a Planning Governance process. Development Governance will take over the lifecycle of the service ensuring that the candidates are built right.
The later stages of the Development Governance process overlap with Operational Governance feeding services and service consumers into operational environments and responding to feedback about their performance and compliance with security and other policies.
SOA Software’s Lifecycle Manager™ is an industry-leading development governance platform that automates machine- and role-based signoffs across the software development lifecycle. It enables enterprises to understand what services and other software assets exist, where they’re located and how each fits into a company’s business and technical landscape. By providing a context for understanding and assessing existing software assets, Repository Manager serves to automate the path to SOA.
SOA Software’s Policy Manager™ is a comprehensive SOA Policy Governance Automation solution offering unique governance processand collaboration capabilities to instill consistency and accountability and encourage desired behavior.
API Planning with Atmosphere
Great APIs result from diligent planning on multiple levels. Atmosphere gives you to tools to think through your whole API strategy, build and deployment processes, ensuring that you plan effectively before going into production.
An effective API Planning solution will help you maximize the return on your investment in APIs by ensuring that you build the right APIs at the right time. It allows you to understand and model dependencies between planned APIs and enterprise services and prioritize development of each appropriately, making sure your organization builds APIs and enterprise services based on current and planned needs according to a well thought-out program.
One of main benefits of an API planning solution is that it will help you make sure that you identify the goals you have for your API program, so that you can manage for success. As the old adage says, if you don’t know where you going, how will you know when you get there. As your company makes its first steps towards APIs, it’s absolutely critical that you decide what you want the outcome of your API program to be, so that you can design and build the right APIs for the job.
It is also important to identify the existing resource that you have that can help form the foundation of your APIs. An Enterprise API should be an extension of an existing business process or application, and as such you should use existing enterprise services exposed by this process or application, or should work with the application or process owner to expose services that you can use as you create your API. The planning process will help tie your API program to an enterprise SOA initiative to help ensure the stability and performance of your APIs.
SOA Software’s Portfolio Manager provides the industry’s first comprehensive API planing solution offering:
- A Rich Set of Tools - We provide you with a robust set of tools for API definition, content, as well as policy and lifecycle management. This way, you can rest assured that your APIs are correctly structured and well documented, and integrate well with internal design and development processes.
- Decide how you are going to do APIs – start from scratch, leverage existings apps or both. In addition to exposing new capabilities, you can leverage Atmosphere to harness existing investments in web services and enterprise SOA, with new formats and policies specific to an outside developer group.
- Understand how your will share and promote your APIs through numerous community options.
- Think through usage quotas, security and policy issues at the pre-build stage.
- Think about your APIs from the App Point of View - Atmosphere provides sophisticated yet simple security capabilities that enable API developers to gauge how they want to manage and monitor their APIs.
Developer Community Management
API Management is about much more than just monitoring an API.
It is about making sure you build the right API with API Planning; build them correctly using an API Development solution; make sure they are behaving correctly with API Operations infrastructure; and supporting all of this with a common underlying set of API Management services.
Of course, at the end of all this all you have is a service published outside your enterprise. It’s really not an API yet, not until you publish, promote it, and support it through your developer community. One of biggest problems you face is that you really don’t know how to tell people about it, and when you do find someone who’s interested, you have to be able to feed them all the information they need to use it without getting overwhelmed trying to support them all.
This is where the Enterprise API Platform (EAP) shines, regardless of whether you are trying to broadcast your Open API to the whole wide world, or to expose an Enterprise API to groups of developers inside your own business. EAP allows you to market your API or App inside or outside your enterprise with a powerful search driven catalog offering rich social features like ratings, reviews and following. You can publish your API into EAP with appropriate descriptions and tags to make it easy for potential consumers to find it through search and browse, including external (public or enterprise) search engine integration and optimization.
Of course, once someone has found your API, they need to decide if it is the right API for them to use. This is where the definition and documentation capabilities come into play, and where the discussion forums and user following capabilities allow them to ask questions, or see how active the community around your API is.
API Documentation
People need to be able to use your API without burdening you with a ton of questions and complaints. You need to ensure that you define it properly, document it well, and publish the definition and documentation effectively.
EAP provides a robust set of tools for API definition, documentation, and content management, as well as policy and lifecycle management. This allows you to make sure your APIs are correctly structured and well documented. EAP also integrates well with internal design and development processes to help make sure that the internal services and applications that support your API are up to the task.
API Search Index
Good stuff, you’ve defined your API properly and have published it with well-structured documentation. It’s in the catalog with a nice description, an appropriate name and set of icons, and you’ve even convinced a few friends to post nice encouraging reviews and ratings for it. Now it’s time to hope that potential users can find it.
EAP provides a very powerful built-in system that creates an internal search index from all the content about the APIs and Apps that it is aware of, complete with sufficient permission information so that it knows which users it can show search results for particular APIs and Apps to. Hopefully the phrase “all the content” caught your eye, because that’s one of the more interesting things here. The content about your API or App doesn’t just include its name and any description information you typed in, it also includes all the documentation, and most importantly all the discussion topics and comments posted about it. This means that if someone asks a question on your API’s Board about how it handles a particular type of widget, then when someone searches for anything to do with that widget, they will find your API. Think about the use-case where you are writing a piece of code and you run into a problem and use Google to search for the specific error code or exception text. Because EAP is indexing all this information, these types of searches work in real-time.
Maybe even more important in EAP’s search capabilities is its ability to publish and maintain its index in enterprise or public search engines. This means that your developers can find information about your API regardless of how they look for it.
App Connection Provisioning
You’re making real progress with your API now. It’s well defined and documented, you’ve published it into a dynamic catalog where users are able to find it, rate it, review it and discuss it. What more could you possibly want?
How about allowing Apps to actually use your API, and controlling the way they use it? EAP allows developers to define their Apps – in much the same way that you defined your API. In fact, the App definition has all the same features with documentation, ratings, reviews, discussion boards and the whole nine yards, as your API definition. It also allows the developer to create a team of peers that can work together on the App. This may all seem a bit fluffy and useless, until we get to the real purpose of the App definition.
EAP provisions API access individually to each App. It creates an identifier for the App, and the App developer can upload a CSR (certificate signing request) for a locally generated public key. The App will then use this App-id (optionally signed) to authenticate itself to EAP. The App developer will find the API(s) they want their App to use, and will initiate a simple approval workflow to grant their App access to the APIs. Depending on how the API is configured, they can also request different throughput levels based on pre-defined quota policies. Once the workflow process completes and their App’s access to the API(s) is approved, the App can begin sending requests to the API.
There’s quite a bit more to this, including the ability for an API to expose sandbox (test) and production endpoints, with a multi-step approval process for granting Apps access to each of the endpoints. This may sound complex, but in most circumstances, sandbox access will be automatically approved, and getting approval for production access is a simple process involving a single button click for the App developer, and a simple response to a newsfeed item and/or notification from the API administrator.
One of the interesting side-effects of this provisioning process is that Atmosphere is able to monitor the API from the perspective of each of the Apps. The API administrator can see all of the monitoring data and can choose to see a pie chart showing which Apps are consuming their API the most, they can filter the monitoring data by App to provide support for a particular App owner, or can use this data to identify poorly written or malicious Apps that are causing problems for their API, so they can disable or throttle them appropriately. Similarly, the App owner will see the API from the perspective of their App only. They will only see their traffic and performance information, and the usage data and messages their App is generating.
API Socialization
Assuming you’re following along with the various steps above, then by this point you now have a rock solid API that is well structured and documented, published in a catalog with great search facilities, and is protected from all kinds of bad things. Developers are starting to find it through the traditional search and browse models, but that’s not good enough in today’s social-media driven world. You need your API (or App) to go viral. Bring on the social world.
EAP is the social platform for API Management and App development. It brings together API providers and App developers in an online social community. Whether this community exists inside your enterprise, as a private external community, or part of a broad public developer community is entirely up to you. EAP’s social features include:
Invitations
Any EAP user, developer, business administrator, or API provider can invite other users to the party. Invitations can be general, simply inviting a user to check out the specific EAP instance, or they can invite a user to follow an API, App, or Group, or join the development team for an App. In this way you can immediately create your own communities of interest around your APIs and Apps. By encouraging the people you invite to invite their contacts too, you can build a huge social community connected to your resources.
Developer Support
One of the bigger challenges you’ll face with your API is the potential of becoming a victim of your own success. What’s going to happen when you drive this massive social adoption of your API? How on earth are you going to manage the volume of support requests and questions you’re sure to get?
Again, EAP has the answers. The first thing, of course, is to make sure that your API is well structured and well documented, as we discussed earlier. You can make developers’ lives even easier by providing them with SDKs and code samples, and EAP allows you to publish and promote these with your API. But where the real beauty kicks in is when your developer community becomes self-sufficient and users start helping each other out by answering questions and even responding to trouble tickets. Because everything is so efficiently indexed, it’s really easy for users to search for errors, issues or questions, and get immediate help and answers from questions and issues that have already been resolved. Sure, you’ll have to put some effort into getting your community moving, but the time and energy you dedicate early on will pay enormous dividends later. As my mother used to say, “A stitch in time saves nine.”
B2B API Integration
Of course not every API will be destined to be truly “Open” - designed to target a broad community of App developers sharing ideas and applications in an open forum. In fact, we expect to see far more private or semi-private APIs that a business uses to share specific functions or data with one (private) or more (semi-private) partners.
EAP enables this by introducing the concepts of API and App privacy settings, enabling a number of key scenarios:
In one of the most common scenarios you may have an API that you wish to use to enable integration with several partners, but you don’t want any of the partners to know anything about each other, or even to know that there are other partners using the API. EAP allows you to define a private API and invite users to follow and connect to it – the invitations are required, because the API will not be published in the search indexes and will not be visible to any user who has not been specifically invited. In this mode, user posts, discussions and comments will be visible only to that user and to the API administrators.
Another common requirement for private APIs is the need to create an API that is visible and consumable by a defined (invited) group of users. Any member of the group will be able to see posts and comments from other members, but the API and all its content will be hidden from anyone outside that group. This is particularly useful as a tool for publishing a version of an API for use by a beta test group, in advance of launching the API to the public.
Share Developer Communities
All these capabilities sound great, but at the end of the day, the success of your API initiative depends very much on your ability to get your API in the hands of as many developers as possible. So how can you go about building your own developer community? Maybe a better question would be, why should you go about building your own developer community when there are already a bunch of communities out there? More to the point, what about your partners or other like-minded companies with their own APIs that a developer building an App that uses your API might also use?
EAP supports the concept of API provider federation to bring together communities giving developers access (with approval) to any API from any provider using a single App ID, and allowing providers to leverage the network effect of all the connected communities to find the broadest possible reach for their API. All this is done with federated trust and permission models that allow API providers to opt in or out at granular levels, and to choose the partners with whom they want to federate.
Because we offer EAP as a PaaS platform as well as via on-premise or hybrid models, there will be a ready-made community for EAP customers to connect to, whether they choose to create their own tenant in the EAPaaS platform, or install the product in their own datacenters. Customers will be able to choose how much or little sharing they do with the broader community, depending largely on how ‘Open’ they view their APIs.

SOA Software Enables Enterprise APIs for Business Partner and Employee Applications
Atmosphere API management product provides unique capabilities supporting enterprise as well as open API and app developer communities
Los Angeles, CA. – June 11, 2012 – SOA Software, a leading provider of SOA governance, cloud and enterprise API management products, announced today that it has added extensive enterprise API capabilities to its SOA Software AtmosphereTM product family to enable business to employee and business to business applications.
Enterprises are increasingly making business applications available as APIs in order to drive business growth and expose new revenue and partnership opportunities, and ultimately to improve business efficiency. Open APIs allow external developers to build applications that leverage core business capabilities. Enterprise APIs are offered to a more limited group to enable more sensitive B2B or B2E (employee) applications. Both enterprise and open APIs are typically built on a foundation of enterprise SOA services, taking these services and productizing them with documentation, support, access provisioning, quality-of-service (QoS) management and other API-centric capabilities. Enterprise APIs introduce additional requirements to ensure the security and privacy of the API and the capabilities and data they expose.
Atmosphere provides a secure, robust platform that companies can use to share their APIs with the growing app developer community, their partners, and customers. Atmosphere manages, monitors and secures companies APIs. Atmosphere ensures that these APIs deliver the level of service customers and partners require; that corporate and customer information and assets are secure; and that the integrity of the corporate brand is protected. SOA Software’s latest update to Atmosphere introduces comprehensive and flexible enterprise API capabilities, including:
- Private APIs – Atmosphere allows API owners to mark their API as private so it can only be found and viewed by invited users. The API administrators can invite users to view and access the API.
- Groups – Atmosphere enables API administrators to define specific and distinct groups to access their APIs. Within the product are capabilities for providing different groups with contextual discussion forums which allow users to post questions, comments and get support. The forums can be either private in the context of their own group, or publicly in the scope of the entire API. This allows the administrators to use the same API to support different business partners, without exposing one partner to another.
- Teams – Atmosphere defines the concept of an App development or API team. This is a defined and invited team of users who share common responsibilities for administering or accessing an API or App. This enables the kind of collaborative environment that is required for enterprise application development.
- User & role management – Atmosphere allows an individual user to have multiple different roles depending on their context (the API or App they are working with). It allows administrators to share and delegate responsibility for certain actions with other users.
“Our large enterprise customers are using APIs to enable business-to-employee and business-to-partner applications,” said Alistair Farquharson, SOA Software chief technology officer. “The private API, group and team capabilities in Atmosphere help these organizations ensure the security and privacy of their enterprise APIs.”
These new enterprise API capabilities extend Atmosphere’s existing functionality which include:
- API definition, content, policy and lifecycle management that ensures APIs are correctly structured and well documented with integration with internal design and development processes.
- Intermediation to simplify the creation of RESTful APIs with both XML and JSON content from various internal service types with powerful paging and caching to improve app performance.
- Sophisticated security capabilities to help protect APIs from abuse and ensure the privacy of customer data.
- Comprehensive QoS management (SLAs and quotas) to protect internal applications from overload of the API and to provide customers with service-level guarantees.
- Extensive consumer contract monitoring and management of traffic from individual apps.
- Integrated sandbox, testing and debugging capabilities to simplify the delivery of high-quality APIs.

SOA Software Shares Formula for Success in Enterprise API Management at Cloud Expo
APIs are the new way to share information and reach new markets
Los Angeles, CA. – June 6, 2012 –SOA Software, a leading provider of SOA governance, cloud and enterprise API management products, will share innovative strategies for driving business growth through the use of APIs at Cloud Expo in New York, June 12-13, the company announced today.
Enterprises are increasingly making business applications available as APIs in order to drive business growth and expose new revenue and partnership opportunities. As a result APIs are reshaping the business landscape as dramatically as the rush to create an Internet presence with a web site did in the late 1990’s. APIs are becoming the primary way that businesses interact with their customers, reach new markets, and provide the global app development community with the tools to deliver business capabilities to customers.
Corey Scobie, Vice President of Technology at SOA Software and a recognized industry expert in enterprise API management, will be presenting at Cloud Expo and at the Cloud Computing Boot Camp with a featured session titled “Using APIs to Extend Your Business Reach” as well as two other sessions about API management. Cloud Expo, presented by SYS-CON each year in California, New York, Prague, Tokyo, and Hong Kong, is the world’s leading Cloud event. Now in its fifth year, Cloud Expo is larger than all other cloud computing events combined.
“We are honored to be selected to present at such a highly regarded cloud computing event,” said Roberto Medrano, Executive Vice President of Marketing for SOA Software. “SOA Software experiences will be shared with conference attendees about how APIs and API management provides new value to enterprises.”
In addition to the boot camp, Mr. Scobie will be presenting a technical breakout session, “How Does My Enterprise API Platform Differ from Facebook, Twitter and Netflix?”, and at a Demo Theater session, “A Guided Tour of the Enterprise API Management”. The presentations will be based partly on Mr. Scobie’s experience with the SOA Software Atmosphere™ product family, which provides a secure, robust platform that companies can use to share their APIs with the growing app developer community. Atmosphere manages, monitors and secures companies’ APIs. Atmosphere ensures that these APIs deliver the level of service customers and partners require; that corporate and customer information and assets are secure; and that the integrity of the corporate brand is protected.
Mr. Scobie brings a wealth knowledge and practical experience to his role as speaker and technology influencer. He has a 15 year history in the IT industry with experience ranging from enterprise networking and data center operations to software development, product strategy, and sales. Prior to joining SOA Software, he was at IBM, where he was Chief Strategist for the Appliance and Application Optimization businesses. Previously, Mr. Scobie held the role of Technical Executive for the IBM WebSphere DataPower Appliances business, where he was one of the original members of the DataPower team that joined IBM through acquisition in 2005.
